Card games are exceedingly popular lately, especially since many of the big names have gotten their hands dirty in the genre. Hence, even Blizzard has a horse in the race now, and many more have done the same in the last few years. On the other hand, not every CCG is worth your time, and it’s quite simple to tell when something’s not quite right.

HEX: Shards of Fate is not exactly a new game, given the fact that it’s been around for a while, but it now got on Steam, which means that it should allow you to get in contact with an even larger community of players. In short, this is a CCG akin to Magic: The Gathering, but it also features a few new ideas and concepts that work very well in a digital format, which is great for a video game.

In fact, it is even possible to take action in between the turns, provided you have the right cards to deflect an attack.
On top of it all, the game is optimized for player-vs-player encounters, which means that the multiplayer component is very sturdy and engaging. There are many tournaments to compete in, and there are usually nice prizes to go along with them. In addition, you can also trade your cards with other players, which is a feature most CCGs out there lack entirely.
Use real money to acquire cards
In the end, HEX: Shards of Fate also features microtransactions that allow you to purchase cards with real money, but the same cards are also obtainable by playing, even if it takes you a long time. Naturally, players who front the cash have an easier time competing in multiplayer modes, but that doesn’t mean you cannot reach their level with enough work and dedication.

Mamas, don’t let your babies grow up to be wizards. Don’t let them flick wands and summon dybbuks. Make ’em be farmers and blacksmiths and such. A wizard’s life is violent, see, and they always end up fighting other wizards – folks they should trust to hold back their matted locks in the privy as they expelliarmus pints of dwarven brandy.
And yet, the youth pine for pointy hats and curly shoes. Mamas, please, at least point them towards Hex: Shards of Fate [official site]. The free-to-play card game has finally added singleplayer PvE so wizards can stop fighting each other and just kill robots.
Hex’s singleplayer has been planned since its Kickstarter in 2013, and it finally arrived on Tuesday. As this overview explains, it’s a fairly big affair, with plenty of places to explore and dungeons to plunder and PvE-exclusive cards to earn and classes and races to be and… go read that, yeah? Future plans for Hex include a new set of cards every four months, another Adventure Zone for PvE with mercenaries and upgradeable strongholds and things, and other stuff detailed in this post.
Hex Entertainment’s Cory Jones also explains that they’ve finally removed the game’s “beta” tag:
“It may be clear to our hardcore community what the beta tag means, but to the uninitiated it gives the impression that future wipes or major gameplay changes are possible and that’s just not the case. We are committed to delivering everything we promised in the Kickstarter. The removal of the beta tag isn’t about ‘feature complete,’ it’s really about the perception of the game and our desire to let new players understand this is a great place to jump in and start playing Hex!”
