Age of Learning, Inc.[edit]

ABCmouse.com is produced by Age of Learning, Inc., a privately owned education technology company. The company was founded in 2007 by Doug Dohring and is headquartered in Glendale, CA.[22] Age of Learning launched ABCmouse.com in 2010 after three years of development, guided by a team of educators, and following testing by 10,000 families.[23] The company has obtained several patents including the original patent for a vertically integrated educational system.[24]

Members of Age of Learning's Curriculum Board include 2006 National Teacher of the Year Award recipient Kimberly Oliver Burnim,[25] 2014 National Teachers Hall of Fame inductee Dr. Rebecca Palacios,[26][27] and Science Writing Award-winning writer Stephen M. Tomecek.

In 2014, at the White House Summit on Early Education, Age of Learning pledged to the Invest In Us campaign to provide services valued at more than $10 million to preschool, pre-k, and Head Start classrooms over two years.[28] In 2015, the company partnered with another White House initiative, ConnectHome, to provide ABCmouse.com for free to families living in public housing in 27 cities and one tribal nation, serving up to 65,000 children.[29][9]

In 2016, it was reported that Age of Learning raised $150 million from Iconiq Capital, giving the company a $1 billion valuation.[30][31] Age of Learning also launched ABCmouse for Schools in 2016;[16] the enterprise-level solution won an ISTE Best of Show Award at the annual edtech conference.[32]

Content and structure[edit]

ABCmouse.com Early Learning Academy content currently consists of more than 10,000 learning activities and 850 lessons.[9] The preschool through second grade curriculum is laid out in a sequence called the “Step by Step Learning Path.”[33] Parents can register up to three children and set each one at his or her own level based on age and ability.[34] Children can also use any of the content outside of the set learning path. Activities include videos, coloring activities, learning games, poems, puzzles and songs that cover reading and writing, math, art, music, social studies, science, and health.[35] There are also more than 1,000 digital books, including over 100 Stepped Readers.[36] The same content is available whether children log on using their computer or mobile device (iOS, Android, Kindle).[37][38][39][40]

To some, the amount of content “seems almost endless” but can be “almost overwhelming,” suggesting kids will “likely need help navigating the site.”[41] Others have judged it “easy enough for even the youngest computer users”[38][42] and “well designed for children to use” with an “interface that is intuitive for them.”[43][44][33]

Navigation and rewards[edit]

Children navigate the site with the aid of “voice-overs, images, and text,” but younger kids may need help.[45] Children earn tickets each time they complete a learning activity, which they can use to shop at virtual stores to decorate their room or “buy” things for their pets.[46][47]

Educational apps and videos[edit]

The ABCmouse.com Early Learning Academy curriculum can be accessed on tablets and smartphones using apps from the Apple App Store,[48]Google Play,[49] and the Amazon Appstore for Android.[50] Age of Learning also launched ABCmouse Language Arts Animations, ABCmouse Mastering Math, ABCmouse Mathematics Animations, ABCmouse Science Animations, ABCmouse Music Videos, and ABCmouse Zoo apps in the same app stores. These apps can be used online or offline and are available to ABCmouse members.[51][52][53]

In 2015, the company collaborated with the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago to develop a series of web-based assessments.[54] The Assessment Center includes over 8,500 items[55] via 300 assessments.[56]

In 2018, the company partnered with Tencent to launch the ABCmouse English Language Learning program in China.[57][58][59]

Some Age of Learning apps, such as its Aesop's Fables series and Beginning Reader series, have been discontinued and are instead available on the ABCmouse.com YouTube channel.[60][61]

What Teachers Say
“This year, I implemented ABCmouse in every lesson, not only during my lesson time but also during the activities and center time. My students started picking up their letters faster, they were applying phonics faster, they were recognizing sight words faster. When testing came around, I had 78% of my class test advanced in foundational skills. That’s never happened before. . . . ABCmouse captivates a child’s attention in such a wonderful, marvelous way. It’s not just them memorizing stuff, they have the skill, and they’re making those connections across the content areas.”
—Kindergarten Teacher
“On ABCmouse my children are learning to read, they’re doing math problems, social studies, science, everything. . . . Since we’ve begun ABCmouse, our scores are just amazing!”
—Elementary School Teacher

“The BEST children’s educational site that I have ever used. Even my 4th grader begs her sister to let her play!”
—Mother of 4–, 5–, and 10–year–old girls
“I love how everything in the Classroom is interactive. I plan to use this site all summer to keep my kids’ skills sharp. It really breaks up the fact they are learning and feels like we are playing.”

GREAT LEARNING SOURCE 😃

Yes, it's GRRRRRRRREEEEEAAAATTTTTT for anyone 1 to 4-5. I love the learning path. My little kids, Jeremiah and Karielle, love it too! They've been learning so much. Jeremiah is 2 and already knows how to count, spell, and she can read just a little bit. She can count to 35, spell easy things like hi, run, fat, rat, sleep, meet. The thing she likes most is the daily drawings. My little artist 🎨. Karielle is 3 and really enjoys writing and reading. ABC MOUSE! I am hoping to have another child that can become as bright as little Jeremiah and Karielle. Now I know that ABC MOUSE company is probably reading this thinking, 'OMG girl just stop bragging about Jeremiah and Karielle!' But I really am impressed with their growth! I bought Karielle the Junie B. Jones series and she finished it in about half a year. I always have to come upstairs around quarter to 12 and tell her to stop reading in bed! ABC MOUSE is awesome. Parents they are so concerned about your child's growth! I set Karielle on kindergarten setting and she's acing it! If you want good children to learn good things, download ABC MOUSE right now and try it out! ;)

Began using app at 18 months

Granddaughter does her “homework” every morning after breakfast. Brady is now 20 months old and can start and run the app unassisted on my iPad, but I still monitor. She loves the games & puzzles and art projects. The songs are barely tolerated because there is no corresponding video & many songs are just plain lame. She expects songs like on the Dave&Ava app. She absolutely HATES the books offered on this app, as there are no monsters, dinosaurs, glittery unicorns or super heroes. We read regular paper books after ABCMouse time is over. I recommend the app because it gives focus and structure and she finds enough features to keep her interested. She already knew her alphabet and numbers up to 10 before we subscribed, but I can see how this app will gradually progress her learning to word recognition and reading. Plus there are few apps available for the ignored age 1 to 2 kids. Most apps for this age are baby rattle types. Your mileage may vary.

I’ve been using ABC mouse with my countless nieces and nephews for the past six years. This program is totally awesome. It has numerous ways of accessing the material: including the learning path, the classroom, and the map. It has numerous videos games puzzles. It has all the reading a child would need until third grade. I can’t speak highly enough of this program. I currently have two separate subscriptions for three nieces and three nephews of mine. Up until now, I have had numerous subscriptions to other programs; However, none is like ABC mouse! After school, my little ones run to get on ABC mouse. They are so excited to work with this program. They ask me to do more lessons. They love the whole idea of earning tickets and purchasing things that they can interact with. Thanks ABC mouse for such a wonderful, complete, and engaging program!
